The City of Perth Amboy, the Perth Amboy Board of Education and the National Endowment for the Arts, in conjunction with the New Jersey School Construction Corporation and New Jersey Department of Education, are pleased to announce a national design competition for a new high school, to be constructed with state funds as part of New Jersey’s $12 billion school construction program. As one of the 30 Abbott, or “special needs” districts in the state of New Jersey, Perth Amboy residents have an unprecedented opportunity to redesign schools and the contemporary school system.
The goal of this Competition is to select an architect to design a new high school of approximately 489,000 square feet, on a 15.3-acre site positioned as a gateway to the city of Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
Our goals for this Competition are: to stimulate creative thinking for schools in 21st century; to build a school that is an inspiring, challenging, and flexible learning environment; to connect the school to the community; and to improve the educational environment by using the planning and design process for the new school as a tool for positive change. The design challenge is to: resist preconceived ideas of what a high school should look like; to discard cookie cutter “one-size-fits-all” plans; and to truly think out of the box while accepting limitations imposed by the purposes and restraints on the uses of Abbot funds.
Stage II finalists will receive a stipend of $20,000. The winner will be recommended to enter into an agreement for the construction of the high school.
