THE COMPETITION:
Urban planning is always an interesting task, but planning capital cities and their key areas is not only fascinating but also very challenging for all communities which set themselves high standards. And Reykjavík is indeed that kind of community and that kind of city. There is great ambition here to ensure that the planning of the urban environment provides the citizens with a first-rate quality of life, and the public are also enthusiastic about the development of the city. This unique opportunity for the development of Reykjavík coincides, aptly enough, with the beginning of a new century. There are many indications that communications, creativity and culture will take a new course in the new century, where diversity and continuous renewal will take center stage.
