Design Challenge: The 2010 competition will consider the relationship between urban and river edge, specifically the relationship of the City of St. Louis to its Mississippi River. Since 1967 Eero Saarinen’s majestic Arch has commanded St. Louis as it occupies the banks of the Mississippi. Commemorating Thomas Jefferson’s purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1804, the Arch stands within the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park and symbolizes American settlement westward, therefore its name, the “Gateway to the West”. he competition brief will ask participants to propose and portray what that “more” might be along this portion of the Mississippi?
